What is Block Booking?
A prepaid package of classes, typically aligned to a school term, offering a discounted per-session rate in exchange for upfront commitment.
In Detail
A block booking is a bundle of classes sold as a single package, usually aligned to a school term. Families pay for the entire block in advance, typically at a discounted per-session rate compared to drop-in pricing. Block bookings are the most common pricing model for term-time children's activity classes in the UK.
The advantages of block booking for your business are significant: predictable revenue at the start of each term, higher retention (families who have paid for ten weeks are far more likely to attend all ten weeks), simplified administration, and better class planning since you know your numbers in advance. For parents, the advantages are a guaranteed place in the class and a lower per-session cost. The main challenge is that upfront term fees can feel like a large outlay for families, so offering payment plans or splitting blocks into half-term chunks can improve accessibility.
Common block booking policies include: a pro-rata joining fee for mid-term starters, a cancellation or transfer policy (many businesses allow a free transfer to another class but do not offer refunds for missed sessions), and an early bird discount for rebooking the following term before a deadline. Automatic rebooking — where families are assumed to continue unless they opt out — can dramatically improve retention rates but must be communicated clearly to avoid disputes.
