What is Direct Debit?
An automated payment method where fees are collected regularly from a parent's bank account, providing predictable cash flow for your business.
In Detail
Direct Debit is a payment method that authorises you to collect agreed amounts directly from a customer's bank account on a regular basis. For children's activity businesses, Direct Debit enables monthly or termly automatic fee collection without requiring parents to remember to make manual payments. This significantly reduces late payments, improves cash flow predictability, and cuts the administrative burden of chasing fees.
Setting up Direct Debit collection requires working with a Direct Debit bureau or payment provider that is approved under the Bacs Direct Debit scheme. Providers such as GoCardless, Stripe, and specialist children's activity payment platforms handle the technical complexity and compliance requirements. You need to provide each paying parent with a Direct Debit mandate, give advance notice of collection amounts and dates, and follow the Direct Debit Guarantee rules which give customers the right to a full and immediate refund from their bank if an error occurs.
The move to Direct Debit often transforms a business's cash flow. Instead of waiting for term-time lump sums or chasing individual invoices, you receive predictable monthly income. Monthly Direct Debit pricing (spreading term fees across twelve months) also makes your classes more affordable for parents and reduces the barrier to joining. Many businesses report that offering Direct Debit reduces payment defaults to below two per cent, compared to five to fifteen per cent with invoice-based billing.
