What is National Governing Body (NGB)?

A National Governing Body (NGB) is the organisation recognised by Sport England (or its equivalents in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) as the lead body for a specific sport or activity. NGBs are responsible for setting rules, developing coaching qualifications, maintaining safety standards, and promoting participation in their sport. Examples include Swim England (swimming), British Gymnastics, the Football Association, England Netball, and the Royal Academy of Dance.

For children's activity businesses, your relationship with the relevant NGB matters in several ways. NGB coaching qualifications are typically the minimum standard expected by parents, insurers, and venue operators.
