What is Progression Framework?
A structured pathway of skills and milestones that children work through as they develop, giving parents and children clear goals and evidence of progress.
In Detail
A progression framework (also called a pathway, syllabus, or award scheme) defines the skills, competencies, and milestones that children work through as they advance in an activity. Well-known examples include Swim England's Learn to Swim Stages 1-7, British Gymnastics' Proficiency Awards, and the coloured belt system in martial arts. A clear progression framework is essential for both teaching quality and customer retention.
For children, progression frameworks provide tangible goals and a sense of achievement. Moving from Stage 3 to Stage 4, earning a new badge, or achieving a new belt gives children a visible marker of their improvement. This sense of progress is one of the strongest drivers of continued participation — children who can see they are getting better are far more likely to stay engaged. For parents, the framework provides evidence that their investment in lessons is producing results, which directly supports retention.
If your governing body provides a progression framework, aligning your teaching to it gives you credibility and consistency. If there is no established framework for your activity, creating your own is a worthwhile investment. Define clear stages with specific, assessable skills at each level. Create certificates, badges, or wristbands that children receive when they achieve each stage. Build assessment points into your term plan so that progress is formally recognised at regular intervals.
