What is British Gymnastics?

The national governing body for gymnastics in the UK, responsible for coaching qualifications, club affiliation, and the sport's development.

In Detail

British Gymnastics is the recognised national governing body for all gymnastics disciplines in the UK, including artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, tumbling, acrobatic gymnastics, TeamGym, and general gymnastics (recreational and pre-school). It is one of the largest NGBs in the UK, reflecting the enormous popularity of gymnastics as a children's activity.

For children's gymnastics providers, British Gymnastics affiliation provides access to coaching qualifications (from the Level 1 Coaching Assistant to Level 3 Club Coach and above), public liability insurance, DBS checking services, safeguarding training, and a quality mark for your club or business. The BG membership and affiliation structure requires clubs to meet minimum standards around governance, safeguarding, coaching qualifications, and facility management.

British Gymnastics manages the Proficiency Award Scheme and the Badge Scheme, which are widely used by recreational gymnastics providers to structure progression and celebrate achievement. These schemes give children tangible goals to work towards and give parents visible evidence of progress — both of which support retention. The GymMark scheme provides quality assurance accreditation for clubs that meet enhanced standards.
