What is Trial Session?
A free or reduced-price introductory class that allows families to experience your provision before committing to a full booking.
In Detail
A trial session is an introductory class — usually offered free or at a significantly reduced price — that allows a new family to experience your provision before making a financial commitment. Trials are one of the most effective conversion tools for children's activity businesses, reducing the perceived risk for parents and giving you the opportunity to demonstrate the quality of your teaching and environment.
The structure of your trial matters. A good trial experience includes: a warm, personal welcome on arrival, a brief introduction to the session format and what the child can expect, a high-quality session that showcases your teaching at its best, an opportunity for the parent to observe, a conversation afterwards about the child's experience and your programme, and a clear, time-limited offer to join.
Track your trial conversion rate closely — the percentage of trial attendees who go on to enrol. Industry benchmarks suggest 60-75% is achievable for well-run trials. If your rate is lower, examine each stage: are trials being booked but not attended (a confirmation and reminder sequence helps), is the session itself not compelling enough, or is your follow-up too slow or too passive? Some businesses have moved away from free trials towards paid trials to filter for genuinely interested families, often finding that the conversion rate from paid trials is higher despite lower trial volumes.
