What is Governing Body Affiliation?
Formal membership or licensing arrangement with a national governing body, often required for insurance, venue access, and credibility.
In Detail
Governing body affiliation is the formal relationship between your activity business and the relevant National Governing Body (NGB) for your sport or activity. Affiliation typically involves paying an annual fee and meeting minimum standards around coaching qualifications, safeguarding, insurance, and governance. In return, you receive recognition, support, and access to NGB resources.
The benefits of affiliation are substantial. Insurance is often the most immediate — many NGBs provide public liability insurance as part of the affiliation package, which can be more cost-effective than arranging cover independently. Affiliation also gives you access to the NGB's coaching qualifications and CPD programmes, their progression frameworks and award schemes, marketing materials and brand assets, DBS checking services, and safeguarding support. Some venues (particularly schools and leisure centres) require NGB affiliation as a condition of hire.
The decision to affiliate is usually straightforward for single-sport businesses (a swim school affiliates with Swim England, a gymnastics club with British Gymnastics). Multi-sport or creative activity providers face a more complex decision — you may need to affiliate with multiple NGBs, or you may find that alternative bodies such as CIMSPA better serve your needs. Evaluate the cost-benefit carefully: the annual fee, the requirements you must meet, and the tangible benefits you receive.
